SPICE OF THE DAY: SAFFRON

Spice of the day: Saffron. A little bit of this heavenly spice goes a long way. Touted by traditional healers for its antioxidant and medicinal qualities. It’s a good source of copper, potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, selenium, zinc, magnesium, Vit A, folic acid, riboflavin, niacin, and Vit C.
Only a few strands are needed to elevate a dish. Which is good because it can be costly. I meant to purchase some when I was at the Indian stores last week…but forgot. They had a HUGE tin for $18. Oh well I will remember next time. Instead, I purchased 2 grams at Sahadi’s for $9. But, the taste oooh the taste! I just added one pinch to my brown basmati rice…all I can say is AMAZING!

Saffron can be found in all sorts of great dishes..Paella, Bouillabaisse, Risotto Milanese, Saffron Cakes, indian food/Pakistani/Central Asian desserts. It is often confused with Turmeric or Safflower/Osfer. Both of which can be used as substitute for coloring of foods but, not the taste. Lord help me…the taste! It really is amazing!

Sahadi’s:
4 gram 14.95
2 gram 8.95
1 gram 6.50
